While not a health hazard, hard water causes real problems: scale buildup inside pipes (reducing flow and water pressure over time), white crusty deposits on faucets and showerheads, shortened lifespan of water heaters (scale insulates the heating element, forcing it to work harder), soap that does not lather well, and dry skin and hair.

A water softener removes calcium and magnesium ions through a process called ion exchange. Water flows through a tank filled with resin beads that attract and hold the hardness minerals, exchanging them for sodium ions. When the resin becomes saturated, the system automatically regenerates (flushes) with a salt brine solution to recharge the beads. This cycle repeats continuously, providing a steady supply of softened water.

Proper sizing is essential for a water softener to work efficiently. The system must be matched to your household's water usage and the hardness level of your water (measured in grains per gallon or parts per million). An undersized unit will regenerate too frequently, wasting salt and water. An oversized unit will regenerate too infrequently, allowing bacteria to grow in stagnant resin.

Licensed plumbers install water softeners at the point of entry (where the main water line enters the home, but after the water heater supply tee), connect the drain line for regeneration discharge, set up the control valve programming, and verify proper operation.
