Signs You Need Hydro Jetting

If you notice any of these warning signs, it may be time to call a licensed plumber.

Drains That Re-Clog Quickly

Lines that clog again within weeks or months of snaking likely have buildup that only hydro jetting can fully remove.

Heavy Grease Buildup

Kitchen drains in homes or restaurants with heavy cooking use accumulate grease that mechanical snaking cannot fully clear.

Tree Root Intrusion

Root growth inside sewer pipes causes recurring blockages that hydro jetting can cut through and clear.

Slow Main Sewer Line

The entire house drains slowly, suggesting widespread scale or buildup throughout the main sewer pipe.

About Hydro Jetting

Hydro jetting is the gold standard for clearing and cleaning sewer and drain lines. A specialized nozzle attached to a high-pressure hose is inserted into the pipe and propelled forward by jets of water at 3,000 to 4,000 PSI. The forward-facing jet cuts through blockages while rear-facing jets scour the pipe walls, removing grease, scale, soap buildup, mineral deposits, and even tree roots.

Unlike mechanical snaking, which punches a hole through the blockage but leaves buildup on the pipe walls, hydro jetting cleans the full circumference of the pipe back to near-original condition. This is why hydro jetting provides longer-lasting results — a snaked drain may re-clog in weeks or months, while a hydro-jetted line can stay clear for years.

Hydro jetting is effective on residential drain lines (kitchen, bathroom, laundry), main sewer lines, and commercial drain systems (restaurant grease lines, industrial drains). It is the preferred method for clearing heavy grease accumulation in kitchen lines and restaurant drains where mechanical snaking is insufficient.

Before hydro jetting, a camera inspection is typically performed to assess the pipe's condition. Hydro jetting is not recommended for severely deteriorated or fragile pipes (such as old Orangeburg or badly corroded cast iron), where the high-pressure water could cause additional damage. Your plumber will confirm the pipe can safely handle the process before beginning.

How It Works

1

Camera Pre-Inspection

A camera inspection assesses the pipe condition to confirm it can safely handle high-pressure water and to identify the blockage.

2

Quote & Preparation

You receive an upfront price and the plumber sets up the hydro jetting equipment at the appropriate access point.

3

High-Pressure Cleaning

A specialized nozzle delivers water at 3,000–4,000 PSI, blasting through blockages and scouring the pipe walls clean.

4

Post-Jetting Verification

A follow-up camera inspection confirms the pipe is fully cleared and the interior walls are clean.

Hydro Jetting — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does hydro jetting cost in New York?
Hydro jetting in New York typically costs between $350 and $800 for a residential sewer line. The price depends on the length of the line, severity of the blockage, and access point location. For commercial or restaurant grease lines, costs may be higher. A free estimate is provided before work begins.
Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?
Hydro jetting is safe for most pipe materials including PVC, ABS, cast iron, clay, and concrete. However, it is not recommended for severely deteriorated or fragile pipes. A camera inspection is performed first to confirm the pipe can safely handle the water pressure. Your plumber will recommend alternative cleaning methods if the pipe condition warrants it.
How often should sewer lines be hydro jetted?
For most residential homes in New York, hydro jetting every 2 to 4 years is sufficient to prevent buildup. Homes with heavy kitchen use, mature trees near the sewer line, or older pipes may benefit from annual jetting. Commercial kitchens and restaurants typically need hydro jetting every 6 to 12 months.
What is the difference between snaking and hydro jetting?
Snaking uses a mechanical auger to punch through a blockage, clearing a path for water flow. Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to blast the blockage away and scour the entire pipe wall clean. Snaking is effective for simple clogs, but hydro jetting provides a more thorough and longer-lasting clean — especially for grease, scale, and root intrusion.
