Power outages disrupt everything — heating, cooling, refrigeration, lighting, medical equipment, home security systems, and sump pumps. A whole-house standby generator activates automatically within seconds of a power outage, restoring electricity to your entire home (or critical circuits) until utility power returns. Unlike portable generators, standby generators require no manual setup, refueling, or extension cords.

Standby generators are permanently installed outside the home and connected to the electrical system through an automatic transfer switch (ATS). When the ATS detects a power outage, it signals the generator to start and transfers the home's electrical load from the utility to the generator — typically within 10 to 30 seconds. When utility power returns, the ATS transfers the load back and shuts down the generator.

Generator sizing is critical. An undersized generator cannot power all intended circuits simultaneously, while an oversized generator wastes fuel and money. Licensed electricians perform a load calculation to determine the right generator size — considering critical loads (HVAC, refrigeration, medical equipment, sump pumps) and optional loads (lighting, cooking, entertainment). Whole-house generators typically range from 14kW to 26kW for residential applications.

Fuel options include natural gas (connected to the existing gas line — no refueling needed), propane (stored in a tank on the property), and diesel. Natural gas is the most convenient for homes with existing gas service. Installation includes the concrete pad, generator mounting, fuel connection, electrical connection through the transfer switch, and programming the exercise schedule (generators run briefly each week to stay in readiness).
